Spherical Lenses

All About Spherical Lenses

4Eyeglasses have been elevated over the past decade to the level of "fashion statement." Some of us have worn eyeglasses for years upon years out of necessity, while (oddly) we have no idea how they actually work in correcting our vision.

Spherical Power: The definition of a dsphere prescription is rather elementary. "Sphere" refers to a perfectly round orb. When the eye is perfectly round, the optometrist states that the patient has a "sphere prescription" and no correction is necessary. Conversely, if the shape of the eye is football shape or otherwise not spherical, the eye requires corrective lenses. These lenses can correct such commonly known irregularities as nearsighted, farsighted, astigmatism and so on. You may ask "If my eye is a sphere, why purchase prescription lenses from a professional?"

Spherical Lenses: There are a few reasons to purchase sphere lenses, even if you never needed prescription lenses. Throughout primary school you could see the board and when working, you could see the computer screen without issue. However, when we garner a given amount of candles on our birthday cake, we begin to need assistance to see close up -- yes, bifocals. These can be incorporated by the lens lab into your spherical lenses, so you have distance and mid-vision using the top, but have reading assistance at the bottom of the lens. Unlike purchasing "readers" from your discount store, with professionally made lenses, there is no need to take them on and off.

There are also sphere lenses that professionals can provide which are unavailable in retail outlets. Specialty treatments such as UV blocking, polarized lenses (if you are a boater), specialty tinting and anti-reflective properties. For quality Spherical lenses, always rely on the advice of your eye care professional as they continue to care for your eye health.
